June 2016 Tween and Teen Program
Radiant Girl Summer Empowerment Retreats
Preteens haven't experienced such rapid growth since infancy, with physical and emotional changes kicked into high gear, it is no wonder the middle school years can be one of the hardest periods of childhood, On top of physiological imbalances, our preteens have the added pressures of high-stakes testing, greater academic loads, and the pressure of social media.
At Radiant Girl Retreat we address these issues head on, giving girls the insight and tools to manage their stress and emotions in a healthy and constructive way. Our retreat cultivates a community where girls embrace their true selves and strengthen skills to navigate their complicated world with confidence, clarity and compassion.
The girls who join our retreat quickly realize that they belong to a community of girls that radiate positive energy and lifts each other up. These Radiant Girls carry this practice out into the world with them and continue to shine from within even after the retreat. The girls develop an authentic sisterhood and enjoy a place where they can be themselves, make mistakes, and take on bigger challenges then they had ever dreamed.
Our daily schedule is a balance of activities that will nourish the mind, body and spirit. We have fun mindfulness activities, introspective art lessons (both guided and free form), various yoga styles, energizing games, and time to relax and connect with nature. In the evenings we have theme nights (with a Radiant Girl spin) such as, self-care, dance parties, and charades.
At the heart of our retreat is our Empowerment Workshop where girls engage in self-inquiry, explore possibilities, and chart their unique course. Our passionate leaders serve as mentors as we get into complicated topics and role-play, plan, and prepare for times when the girls may need to compassionately communicate or firmly stand their ground. Through visualizations, creating dream boards, and conquering the "critic" within, Radiant Girls come away with a new mindset that will empower them to reach their unique and highest potential.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any down time?
After lunch and dinner girls have time to process, practice, and reflect on all that they have learned. Most of our girls use this time to connect with each other and deepen their friendships. Although this time is unstructured, activities will be offered and girls will always be under supervision to ensure their safety.
I'm nervous about the whole overnight thing, can you tell me more about that?
Firstly, we totally get you and our first retreat was not overnight as we understand we all like our "babies" tucked away under our care at the end of the day. However, we found that we have so much that we want to give to our girls and our curriculum is so rich with information that we need more time with them! Also, we have revised our retreat to include even more empowering content and elevating activities, and in order to keep the price affordable, we need to maximize the days we have together.
Additionally, all of our instructors and volunteers have undergone extensive background checks and we train all our staff on safety precautions and protocol. The leaders, all females, sleep under the same roof as the girls, ensuring that everyone stays tucked in and safe.
Finally, each evening girls will have the opportunity to make phone calls if they wish (no personal cell phones), and you will be provided with two contact numbers (a primary and a back up) to reach your child in case of an emergency.
Is this a religious experience?
Wellness is divided into many aspects, one being spiritual wellness. While we will not be addressing or teaching from the perspective of any particular religion, we will be tuning into our innate spiritualness by connecting with our inner voice and that which is uplifting. Our inner voice has two main influences, our religion and our family culture. Many of our activities involve self-reflection such as determining our core values (compassion, honor, respect, etc) and using the understanding of our true selves as a compass in which to navigate rough waters. In summary, your daughter will have a soul-nourishing experience that will reinforce her personal spiritual path.
Isn’t mindfulness the same things as meditation, and isn’t that Buddhism?
Mindfulness is the intentional, accepting and non-judgmental focus of one's attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment. This for many, happens in the form of meditation. Meditation is most often identified with a big-bellied Buddha, and is practiced in many religions including Christianity. However, both meditation and mindfulness are not a religious act, rather a tool used to bring mental processes under greater voluntary control and thereby foster general mental and spiritual well-being .
In our retreat we utilize research-proven concentration strategies (some would call this “simple meditation”) to help participants build self-regulation skills, decrease anxiety, cope with stress, and increase impulse control. Through engaging exercises, participants bring awareness to their breath, thoughts, and emotions. Once they are tuned in, participants acknowledge the content of their mind without becoming identified with that content. This allows the girls to be free from their feelings, and see struggles or difficult emotions as passing moments, not a defining attribute. This concept is key in developing healthy social-emotional wellness in our girls. Click here to read more about mindfulness.
My daughter has never done yoga before, will she be able to participate?
Absolutely, the retreat is designed for participants who have little to no experience with yoga. Yoga is one component of the retreat and we spend about 45 minutes to an hour a day developing a yoga practice. However, this is NOT your typical yoga. While there are some elements of traditional yoga, Radiant Yoga is fun, it is invigorating, it is different, and the girls LOVE it!!!!!
Additionally, we will be tailoring classes according to each participant's strengths and needs. With a maximum participant to facilitator ratio of 10: 1, you can trust that your daughter will be getting quality guidance to quickly and safely utilize yoga daily in her path to superb health and wellness. Our expert instructors effortlessly make adjustments to meet the needs and abilities of our participants and we encourage all yogi abilities, especially those who have never done yoga before to join.
