Guess what Radiant Tribe? I am on a mission to put myself out there this summer and try things that make me feel uncomfortable. Why? Because during our retreats and workshops I am inspired by your willingness to accept yourself just as you are, while finding the strength and determination to grow into the best version of yourself. That means I need to be willing to take take that risk and make that commitment too!
I was asked a few weeks ago to give an assembly at St. Andrew's Priory on the topic of confidence. I was quite nervous, as the group was ninety 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on a Friday afternoon at 2:00pm. Who wants to do anything on a Friday afternoon at 2:00pm?
I was challenged to design an assembly that allowed the girls to move, yet didn't take up too much time. I also needed to create a sense of intemacy and emotinal security so they would be both open and vulnerable to allowing themselves to get the most from my time with them.
Overall, it was a success and the teachers and students came up to me afterword to thank me for coming and share their positive experience with me. It was time well spent AND I want to share with you the hand out I gave the girls AND a short activity to get you thinking about your confidence. I made a video for you or you can read the text. Last night I watched Miss Representation at Teeny Theater, an event sponsored by St. Andrew's Priory and the Woman's Fund of Hawaii. This film is a political commentary on the gender inequality and under representation of women in influential positions in media, business and government. One thing watching this film did for me was reconfirm just how critical our work at Radiant Girl is, why our mission is so important, and why our retreats are so needed.
Our teens and preteens are really in quite a struggle with the powerful influence of media today and the lack of government regulation. Did you know that many Rated G and Rated R movies have the same amount of nudity and violence? There is just something about a cartoon that makes mid drifts and short skirts age appropriate right? I don't think so, and I don't think you agree either. However, these images and messages shared on media are shaping our cultural values and norms.
One of the first facts the film shared was that preteens and teens spend an average of 10.5 hours a day consuming media. When you add up all their time spent on print, internet, social media, shows and movies that's A LOT! It is THE biggest influence on kids- more then parents, more than education. Read More
